Experiential education rotations offer students the opportunity to step out of the classroom into various real-world practice settings. Through these experiences, students develop as professionals and put the knowledge they have gained to use in hands-on pharmacy practice experiences.

These summer rotations are completed between the P1 and P2 (community) and P2 and P3 (health system) years. Students complete 120 hours in each setting, observing and participating in the daily activities of the site.
Through their activities, students gain knowledge of topics such as:
- Drug distribution and medication use systems
- Order processing within various computer systems
- Order preparation and quality assurance processes
- Company structure and roles of personnel
- Policies and procedures
- Patient care
Longitudinal IPPEs are required courses designed to provide students with an introduction to population and patient health care principles, transitions of care within the health care continuum and interprofessional collaboration.
These rotations are completed during P1, P2 and P3 years of the program. For each longitudinal IPPE course, students are required to complete 20 hours in the field and eight hours in the classroom.
During the P4 year, students complete eight, five-week advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) each consisting of 200 hours. Students have one, five-week module off, one week off in fall and spring and a winter break between semesters.
The purpose of APPEs is to prepare students to provide patient care by practicing professional ability outcomes in a variety of environments. These courses are designed to build upon general and professional abilities developed in the preceding years of the professional curriculum.
Students complete 1600 hours over the course of the year under the supervision of approved preceptors. Student pharmacists function as part of an interprofessional team engaging in a variety of activities depending on the rotation type.

Practice Site Environments
Rotations are currently offered throughout Missouri, Illinois, and 39 other U.S. states, as well as 12 countries across three continents. Rotations often serve communities with diverse cultures and diseases. Health system partners range from small community hospitals to large teaching institutions, and community settings of all sizes are stationed across the country.
While the availability of rotation sites is subject to change, the Office of Experiential Education works with students and preceptors to identify ideal training locations that expose students to new career possibilities and strengthen their ability to provide patient care. Based on their interestes, students rank rotation sites and preceptors for five core and three elective opportunities.
