Public Safety Communications Officer 2nd Shift

General Description :

The Second Shift Communications Officer for the Department of Public Safety serves as service focused public safety officer managing dispatch communications and serving as a key representative to guests, faculty, staff and students as an initial point of phone or in-person contact.  As the first responder for the Department of Public Safety, the communications officer must be customer-focused at all times, in a sometimes stressful environment, maintaining professionalism as a high priority.  The communications officer must remain in control of all events utilizing the radio, telephone, cameras, and paging system until resolution of the incident.

Responsibility :

  • Manage and respond to the public safety radio system, telephone, parking intercom, emergency alerts system, panic alarms, and CCTV system.
  • Utilize the Advocate system to record all of the Office of Public Safety daily activities.
  • Provide customer service to all members of the campus community and their guests.
  • Answer phone calls and interview callers, gather all of the relevant information regarding public safety related issues.
  • Record the information in the system and utilize the information to dispatch the public safety officers in a timely, safe, and professional manner.
  • Ensure the medical campus complex is safe through familiarization of the Office of Public Safety operations in order to assist public safety officers and coordinate with other law, security enforcement, and emergency service agencies.
  • Know the location and layout of streets, buildings, parks, and other significant areas of the medical campus complex, to maximize the accuracy and speed of dispatches.

Education :

A.        Education & Experience:

  • A minimum high school diploma or GED required, an associate’s degree preferred,
  • 1-3 years of experience in security and/or law enforcement; experienced can be unarmed

B.      Technical Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain an armed St Louis Metro Security License
  • Ability to pass Background Check (Motor Vehicle Record)
  • Experience using close circuit television systems (CCTV), cameras, monitors, and building access software.
  • Knowledge of current security regulations and student code of conduct policy/procedure commonly associated with  post-secondary educational facilities
  • Ability to assess and act prudently and quickly in crisis situations and deal with responses to emergencies
