Euts Head to KIAC Tourney with One Conference Win

The Eutectic men’s tennis team enjoyed its first team win of the 2014 season over Alice Lloyd College on April 12. In Wilmore, Ky., after losing 9-0 to conference leader Asbury University in the morning, the Eutectics turned the tables against Alice Lloyd College in the afternoon, winning all nine courts. It was the first team win of the season for the Eutectics, but they didn’t have much time to celebrate. The following morning, they were back on the courts to face the Berea College Mountaineers on their home courts. At court-three doubles, fifth-year Nick Woodard and first-year Justin Weigal teamed up for the only STLCOP doubles win, smashing their opponents 8-2. Then, in singles, fourth-year Alex Cline fought hard to win court one against Berea’s Sam Jackson 7-5, 6-4. Unfortunately for the Eutectics, those were the only courts to go their way and the STLCOP team lost the match 7-2.

On Saturday, April 19, the Eutectics hosted fourth ranked KIAC team Indiana University East, losing 8-1. Woodard and Weigal had the only victory for the Eutectics at third doubles, winning 8-5. Down 2-1 after doubles, the Eutectic team did not make it easy for the Red Wolves, but were unable to come up with another court win. Third-year Brad Rumancik came the closest to victory at number-five singles. After getting down 4-1 and then losing 6-4 in the first set, Rumancik dominated the second set 6-0. But, the third-set tie-break did not go his way and he lost 10-5.

The Eutectics will travel to Wilmore, Ky., ranked sixth of seven teams, for the KIAC tournament at Asbury University beginning Friday, April 15. They are scheduled to play third-ranked Brescia University in the first round.
